Lam makes apology for conflicts in Hong Kong
    2019-06-19  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

HONG KONG’S Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor yesterday apologized, in person, to the public for the social conflicts caused by the government’s proposed amendments to the city’s extradition laws.

After two mass protests against the extradition bill in the past two weeks, Lam said she was also saddened for those injured in the conflicts, including participants, police officers and reporters.

For the deficiencies in the work of the special administrative region government over the amendment exercise, Lam said she personally has to “shoulder much of the responsibility” and offered her “most sincere apology” to all the people of Hong Kong.

Lam hoped the city could resume order and peace.

“I truly hope that the injured will fully recover soon, and the rift in society can be quickly mended,” Lam said.

She made the televised apology three days after she suspended the bill and apologized to the public in a press statement, because the SAR government’s deficiencies in its work had led to controversies and conflicts in the community and caused disappointment and grief among the people.

By suspending the legislation in the Legislative Council, she hoped that the city could return to a harmonious state and avoid injuries to anyone, the government said in the statement.
