Man with trouble breathing recovers after surgery
    2019-06-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MAN in Guangming District who suffered breathlessness due to secretory otitis media has been cured by doctors at the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, the Shenzhen Evening News reported.

The resident, identified as Xiaolong, 28, was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism 10 years ago and has been taking medication to control his disease, the report said. As he sometimes would forget to take the medicine, his hyperthyroidism hadn’t responded well to the treatment, and it developed into Graves’ disease, which presents with bulging eyes.

Four years ago, his nose seemed to be blocked, which caused shortness of breath. As a result, he snored loudly, suffered from hearing loss and could only breathe with his mouth open every 30 seconds.

During a physical examination, a nasopharyngeal mass, a kind of tumor inside the throat, was found to have caused secretory otitis media. The diagnosis meant that Xiaolong needed surgery to remove the nasopharyngeal mass.

Xiaolong’s doctors attempted to conduct surgeries on him, but had to suspend the surgeries several times due to high risks caused by his severe snoring.

On May 24, Xiaolong was accompanied by his father to the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Doctors from the Department of Otolaryngology organized a consultation with their colleagues from the endocrinology, anesthesiology, cardiology and ophthalmology departments.

Following the discussion, it was believed that the risk of surgery could be lowered enough with the doctors’ comprehensive medical treatment and pre-operative preparation that Xiaolong could undergo surgery.

On June 3, with close cooperation of anesthesiologists, director of the Department of Otolaryngology, identified only by his family name Fan, performed a surgery for Xiaolong. The operation was completed successfully with no complications.

Xiaolong recovered after the surgery. He has stopped snoring and his hearing improved.

The nasopharyngeal mass inside Xiaolong’s throat is called the adenoid. Like a tonsil, the adenoid develops and expands as a patient ages. Toddlers 4 to 6 years old will see the greatest growth for the adenoid, and then it will gradually shrink following puberty.

As children are the most vulnerable to this illness, early intervention is key to treatment. Parents should pay attention if their child often breathes through the mouth and snores.

The breathlessness may be cured with medication if treated early, but surgery will be considered under severe circumstances.
