FOR the first time, Shenzhen University (SZU) appears on the QS World University Rankings’ main list. The university ranks in third place among Guangdong universities included on the list released yesterday and is in 32nd place among universities on the Chinese mainland.

On the QS list, Shenzhen University ranks in the range of 701-750 among all the universities in the world, but has made a giant leap to take third place among Guangdong universities, following Sun Yat-sen University and South China University of Technology.

This year’s QS list evaluates over 1,000 higher education institutions around the world and 42 universities on the Chinese mainland. The top three mainland universities are Tsinghua University, Peking University and Fudan University.

The QS World University Rankings is one of the world’s four most authoritative university rankings, including Times Higher Education World University Ranking, U.S. News Best Global Universities and Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Shenzhen University has made it onto all of the four rankings in recent years and is regarded as one of the universities showing the fastest development.

A total of 12 Chinese academic institutions have been included in the global top 100 of the 16th edition of the QS World University Rankings.

Tsinghua University is China’s highest-ranked university on the list, rising from last year’s 17th place to 16th. Peking University rose by eight places to 22nd globally. Both have their highest ranking since the list was established.

Globally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology was named the world’s leading university for a record-breaking eighth consecutive year on the rankings, while Asia’s top universities are the Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore, both in 11th place.

Universities are measured on academic standing, graduate employability, student and staff ratios, research impact and internationalization.
