Smuggler caught

SHENZHEN Customs caught an inbound traveler carrying five endangered corals weighing 12 kilograms at Luohu Checkpoint on Wednesday.

In the X-ray check, some items in the traveler’s luggage couldn’t be recognized due to its high density. After opening up the baggage, customs officers found whitish items resembling corals.

The items have been impounded for further investigation.

Safety island

SAFETY islands will be built and traffic control lights will be added at the intersection of Huaqiang Road North and Shennan Boulevard for pedestrians’ safety. Pedestrian traffic can reach 3,500 to 5,000 people per hour during rush hours, according to a Daily Sunshine report.

Zebra crossings will be drawn at the intersection of Huaqiang Road South and Shennan Boulevard to separate Huaqiang Road into southern and northern sections. The slow traffic system around Huaqiang Road South will also be renovated, according to Futian District Transport Bureau.

Diesel smuggling

SHAWAN Customs in cooperation with Longgang law enforcement units recently busted a ring that was suspected of smuggling 3 million liters of diesel between February and June this year.

The smuggled diesel had a market value of 35 million yuan (US$5.07 million), the customs said Wednesday.

In an operation June 14, law enforcement officers arrested four people and seized 8,360 liters of diesel oil.

Drivers involved in the smuggling filled tanks with diesel oil in Hong Kong where the fuel was sold at 4.5 yuan per liter and then sold them in Shenzhen and through the criminal ring at 6.4 yuan per liter on the underground market. Around 40,000 to 50,000 liters of diesel were smuggled daily.
