Zhang Yu JeniZhang13@163.com A FUTURISTIC electronic art installation featuring a five-meter-tall tree with more than 500 flexible displays serving as leaves recently began turning heads at Terminal 3 of Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. The installation called RoTree, which is the world’s first electronic tree made of flexible displays, was independently developed by the Shenzhen-based tech company Royole Corporation. Placed in the striking location of the domestic departure hall on the fourth floor of Terminal 3, the “tree” integrates multimedia displays and human-computer interaction functions. Its light, thin, flexible and high-definition “leaves” not only flutter in the wind like real leaves but also produce stereoscopic effects in a riot of color. The installation has attracted a large number of travelers to take photos since its appearance in the airport in late June. According to the R&D personnel at Royole, the videos and pictures played on RoTree’s flexible displays can be uploaded and changed remotely and wirelessly through a mobile app. The pictures on the many screens can be synchronized to display the city’s promotional video and beautiful scenes like blooming flowers. They can also produce stereoscopic effects like a meteor shower and festival celebration, and provide hourly time announcements. In the future, the installation will present customized scenes according to the airport’s particular needs, and the company will explore more innovative ways for travelers to interact with the “tree,” according to Royole. |
