Rare Arctic fox spotted in Luohu
    2019-07-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

RESIDENTS have spotted an Arctic fox in the Dadi Garden residential community near Taibai Road in Luohu District.

The fox is a protected species in China, belonging to the canine family, and provides economic and scientific research value, Xu Jianyong, a staffer with the Shenzhen Wildlife Rescue Center, told the Shenzhen Economic Daily.

According to a video provided by the residents, the fox appears to be grayish and slightly bigger than domesticated cats, with a long furry tail and a collar around its neck.

The fox was found hiding under cars parked in a parking lot in the community and begging passengers for food, said the residents.

A resident surnamed Wang, who is a shop owner in the community, said that she noticed that a household living in one of the buildings was raising the fox as a pet. About half a month ago, the fox’s owner stealthily threw the fox and its cage near her shop. The fox later ran out of the cage and was found hiding under the cars.

One car driver accidently crushed one of the fox’s fore-legs when it was hiding under the car. Worrying that the fox may starve to death, Wang decided to feed it.

A resident then brought the fox to a nearby pet hospital for treatment on its broken leg. A staffer at the pet hospital realized that the fox was different from an ordinary pet, so he contacted Shenzhen Wildlife Rescue Center for help.

Xu said that the Arctic fox is not suitable to be kept as a pet. It is not a tame domestic animal and carries bacteria. If a resident is scratched or bitten by the fox, he or she must get a rabies vaccine immediately. At the same time, because the Arctic fox is a protected animal, it is against the law to keep one as a pet without permission.

The Arctic fox has been sent to Shenzhen Wildlife Rescue Center. The rescue center will decide on the next steps once the fox recovers. (Jiang Wenyi)
