Measures released to protect students’ eyesight
    2019-07-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN’S health and education authorities have jointly introduced a series of measures to address myopia among students, the Shenzhen Evening News reported.

The amount that schools use electronic products to teach should be no more than 30 percent of the total time.

Schools in principle should not assign homework that needs to be finished online. It is better if students don’t use electronic devices at home for more than 15 minutes at a time and an hour a day total.

Additionally, schools should purchase national-standard tables and chairs for classrooms and increase the time spent outdoors for students. School-based vision care and education programs are also needed.

As students need to stay in the classroom for about six hours every day, substandard classroom lighting, like the inferior LED lights used in some Shenzhen schools, is the main cause of short-sightedness in children, according to research.

As a result, the newly released policy specifies that schools should improve the visual environment to meet relevant standards. Schools should use three-band fluorescent lamps made of rare-earth elements with a diameter of less than 26 mm. The color temperature of the light source should be between 3,300K and 5,300K, and the color rendering index of the light source should be no less than 80.

LED lights should meet RG0 standards issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission with color temperatures of 3,300K to 4,000K to avoid the harm of blue laser.

The eyesight of 50.76 percent of primary, junior and high school students in Shenzhen failed to meet the normal vision standard. Among them, 43.6 percent of primary school students experienced vision problems while the figure for junior and high school students was 75.3 percent and 82.9 percent, respectively. Ninety percent of these vision problems were classified as myopia, according to the report on screening tests for common diseases in 2017-2018 conducted by the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
