Sanitation toolhouse design workshop
    2019-07-11  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The job of a sanitation worker is tough and dirty, but these workers are people a city can’t live without. In China, they are acclaimed as “yellow roses of a city,” “angels on the streets” or “beauticians of a city.”

Most sanitation workers in China still do manual tasks, like collecting garbage and sweeping streets, and most of them work between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. to make sure neighborhoods, streets and public areas are clean before the start of the day.

In Futian District, there are more than 150 toolhouses for sanitation workers. A toolhouse is normally only 12 square meters in size, disorganized and immobile with inefficient utilization of interior space. Without a water supply or electricity, workers cannot rest or eat inside the toolhouses.

Since the toolhouses in Futian have been in use for more than 10 years, the district plans to build new ones that are more functional and comfortable.

Experienced designers and insightful students are invited to discuss the issue and present their proposals at a workshop Saturday organized by the district’s urban management bureau and FuturePlus.

The new toolhouses should serve the following functions: keep the tools organized; provide space for resting and warming food; match the appearance of the communities; improve the sanitation tools and uniforms; easy installation, maintenance and relocation; and use solid, durable and economical materials.

On Saturday morning, the Futian District urban management bureau and FuturePlus will introduce the project in detail. Then in the afternoon, established architects, professors and experts will talk about their suggestions, followed by a group discussion, proposal creation and presentation.

Excellent proposals will be rewarded with cash or design fees once they are adopted. The results will be announced July 16.

Time: 10 a.m.-6 p.m., July 13

Venue: Room 704, Block B, Building 7, Shenzhen Bay Ecology Science and Technology Park, intersection of Baishi Road and Shahe Road West, Nanshan District (南山区白石路和沙河西路交汇处深圳湾生态科技园7栋B座704室)

Metro: Line 2 to Keyuan Station (科苑站), Exit C
