Anthony Davis won’t play in FIBA Basketball World Cup
    2019-07-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

LOS ANGELES Lakers star Anthony Davis will not participate at USA Basketball training camp and will remove his name from consideration for the FIBA Basketball World Cup in September, league sources told Yahoo Sports on Sunday.

Davis, 26, wants to utilize the bulk of his offseason to prepare for a championship run with his new team, sources said.

Davis’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, confirmed his client’s decision to Yahoo Sports.

Davis remains committed to competing in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, sources said. He was a member of the 2012 Olympic team that won gold in London.

Davis was acquired by the Lakers on July 6 after the franchise agreed to a blockbuster trade with the New Orleans Pelicans in June. Davis still plans to be present at the USA Basketball training camp from Aug. 5-9 in Las Vegas to support his teammates, sources said.

The World Cup runs from Aug. 31-Sept. 15 and will serve as a qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics. The coaching staff consists of head coach Gregg Popovich and assistants Steve Kerr, Lloyd Pierce and Jay Wright.
