Office rebuts ‘lucky’ plate number rumor
    2019-07-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Shenzhen Vehicles Administration Office has recently uncovered more license plate number scalpers and reminded citizens to be vigilant in response to rumors that scalpers can select good numbers for clients, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

The office explained that all plate numbers are managed by the State. The system randomly releases a batch of available numbers that the car owner can select from, and the whole process is strictly regulated and encrypted to prevent manipulation and ensure fairness. Many car owners prefer to select consecutive or “lucky” numbers like 6, 8 or 9 and try to avoid 4. They are even willing to pay a high price to get the plates, which leaves the door open for scalpers and frauds. The scalpers claim they can guarantee the selection of such numbers, as well as birthdays and other “lucky” numbers, because of their connections with officers.

The office said that the current selection process includes the options of selecting on-site, which entails choosing from 50 randomly assigned numbers, and selecting online by entering a number or choosing a random number. Therefore, there is no way for scalpers to operate behind the scenes, nor do they have the ability to select numbers with the help of staff members of the office. Some citizens, being unfamiliar with the selection process, fall into the trap of thinking the scalpers are guarantors of “lucky” plate numbers and pay them money. The department said that available plate numbers are released at random periods every day, and car owners can get the numbers they want if they complete the process in the quickest possible time.
