A: Did you watch the Netflix series about a bunch of kids involved in mysterious happenings in a small town in the 80s? B: “Stranger Things,” right? It’s a doozy. A: It’s full of suspense, only the third season is becoming more and more like a zombie movie. Note: This slang term means “something outstanding.” Etymologists are fairly sure that it came from the flower named daisy, an English slang, from the 18th century on, for something that was particularly appealing or excellent. It might also have been influenced by the name of the Italian actress Eleonora Duse, who first appeared in New York in 1893. Something “Dusey” would be excellent of its kind, and it is likely that it and daisy became amalgamated in people’s minds to create a new term, which was then reinforced by Duesenberg, an expensive, classy make of automobile in the 1920s and 1930s. |
