FIVE Cantonese Opera programs performed by young contestants from Shajing Subdistrict won prizes at the 23rd national children’s Chinese opera competition that wrapped up recently in Shanghai. During the competition, thousands of young contestants with superb opera skills competed on the stage, delivering an artistic feast for the audience. They performed nearly every kind of Chinese Opera, including well-known ones like Peking Opera and Kun Opera, and some lesser-known like Baling Opera and Puxian Opera. All programs performed by Shajing students were directed by teachers at Shajing Children’s Cantonese Opera Art Center. In recent years, Shajing Children’s Cantonese Opera Art Center has made outstanding achievements in national competitions. The well-trained teenage contestants have won many awards, which has made traditional Cantonese Opera unprecedentedly vigorous. Shajing Subdistrict has established a Children’s Cantonese Opera Art Center and children’s theater for children’s opera training classes and opera performance practices. According to Li Xianhua, a famous Han Opera performer, Shajing has now become a famous hometown for Cantonese Opera in Guangdong Province.
