Man detained for spreading rumor about woman’s death
    2019-07-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MAN surnamed Wei was detained by police in Hubei Province for spreading a rumor about the death of a Shenzhen tourist who was killed while traveling on Mt. Huashan in Shaanxi Province about 10 days ago.

Following the death of 27-year-old Shenzhen tourist Peng Wen, a rumor circulated online that there was a corpse salvage team at Mt. Huashan scenic spot that would intentionally push lone tourists off the cliff and then charge more than 15,000 yuan (US$2,180) to salvage the body. The rumor was posted by Wei, who also urged tourists not to visit Mt. Huashan alone.

“If you are alone on Mt. Huashan, and without any other tourists in front of or behind you, there is an 80-percent chance you will be knocked off by someone and fall to the bottom of mountain. Why? Those perpetrators are members of a corpse salvage team, trying very hard to make at least 15,000 yuan for pulling each body from the bottom of the mountain,” the post alleged.

In a statement, police in Huayin City, Shaanxi, said the content is seriously inconsistent with the facts and there was no such a team at the scenic park.

The rumormonger, surnamed Wei, 42, is a native of Honghu City, Hubei Province.

In addition to being detained, Wei wrote a letter promising not to spread rumors again.

In the letter, Wei claimed he made up the rumor after reading the news about the woman’s death July 22.

On July 19, Peng was allegedly robbed and then killed by a suspect surnamed Yang while she toured the Mt. Huashan scenic park alone. Yang has been returned to Huayin from Tianshui, Gansu Province, for further investigation. Police recovered Peng’s body with the directions given by Yang.  (Liu Xingzi)
