A WORLD-RENOWNED private U.K. boarding school will open an international school and a bilingual school in Qianhai in Shenzhen, which are expected to begin operations in 2020 and 2021, respectively, according to an agreement signed in Qianhai yesterday.

Du Peng, director of Qianhai Cooperation Zone Authority, and Rosanna Wong, chairman of the board of directors of Harrow International, which manages operations of Harrow schools in Asia, attended the signing ceremony.

Du said the new Harrow schools in Qianhai will open a new chapter in international education in the free trade area, marking a major breakthrough in its drive for internationalization.

He said that international education resources will be important in attracting high-end talents to settle down in Qianhai, where more than 500,000 professionals are expected to work and more than 200,000 people will be living, among whom a large portion will be overseas talents.

Harrow School, an independent boarding school founded in 1572 for boys in Harrow, London, will open the international school, at which all curricula will be taught in English.

The bilingual Innovation Leadership Academy will offer nine years of compulsory education in English and Chinese near the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub, according to Wong.

The international school plans to enroll about 1,000 students in 40 classes. The academy plans to enroll around 1,500 students in 50 classes.

The two schools will cover an area of about 40,062 square meters. The total developed area of the complexes will be around 139,240 square meters. The international school will open enrollment in September 2020, while the academy is scheduled to start enrollment in September 2021.

Wong said high-quality education will be provided at the two schools, catering to the children of high-end talents in Qianhai, and even the entire Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

She said she appreciates the Qianhai authority’s vision for attracting talents to bolster the further development of the area and Shenzhen, which is an important window into China’s reform and opening up, and a modern city with great international influence.

Qianhai and Harrow International signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement on opening the schools in Qianhai in 2016. No further deals regarding tuition fees have been made available.

Currently, Harrow has international schools in Bejing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Bangkok in Thailand.

Harrow alumni include seven former British prime ministers.

According to the official website of Harrow School, a quarter of the boys in the London school who applied in the 2018 university cycle were accepted by the world’s top 10 institutions (QS World University Ranking), including Oxford, Cambridge and Stanford. Nearly all Harrovians move on to university upon completion of their A levels, with the vast majority taking offers from their first-choice institution.
