Rooftop wall falls, damages 13 cars
    2019-08-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A 44-METER-LONG wall on top of a dangerous and deserted building in an industrial park in Lianhua Community, Liantang Subdistrict, Luohu District, fell and damaged 13 cars parked in front of a car maintenance shop below.

No one was injured in the accident Friday, according to a report by the Southern Metropolis Daily.

The industrial park had been listed as an urban rejuvenation project, but some occupants were still living inside, the subdistrict office said.

After the incident, the industrial park was closed and all activities were halted.

Six of the 13 cars had to be scrapped, and the car maintenance shop will compensate the owners.

“I heard a big noise at around noon and then saw dust billowing up in front of the shop. A dozen cars were hit by the wall that fell from the balcony on the sixth floor,” said a man surnamed Zhang who works at one of the other car maintenance shops.

The shop and damaged cars had been enclosed by fencing. Zhang suspected that the reason the wall had fallen was the rain from the days prior to the accident.

“The building had been listed as a dangerous building and will be torn down for renovation. If the wall had been soaking in water for days, it could easily have gotten loose,” Zhang said.

According to a security guard surnamed Liu, the factory is located near Luosha Road and was built in the 1980s. The occupants moved out after the renovation project was initiated several years ago. However, there are still some businesses, mainly car maintenance shops, operating in the industrial park.
