唱衰
    2019-08-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“唱” means “to sing,” and “衰” means “bad.” Originating from Cantonese and often used by Hong Kong people, this term means “to speak ill of” and “to have no confidence in” something. The opposite of this term is “看好,” which means “to have confidence in.”

Example:

A: 我不明白为什么有人唱衰迪斯尼选择刘亦菲出演花木兰?她有舞蹈功底,武打动作一定很美。

Wǒ bù míngbái wèishénme yǒurén chàngshuāi dísīní xuǎnzé liúyìfēi chūyǎn huāmùlán?Tā yǒu wǔdǎo gōngdǐ,wǔdǎ dòngzuò yīdìng hěnměi。

I don’t get why some people spoke ill of Disney’s decision to cast Liu Yifei in the role of Hua Mulan. With her years of training in dance, Liu can perform stunning martial art moves.

B: 可能他们觉得刘亦菲的形象太柔弱,不符合花木兰的人设吧。

Kěnéng tāmen juédé liúyìfēi de xíngxiàng tài róuruò,bù fúhé huāmùlán de rénshè ba。

Perhaps they think Liu’s image is too soft to fit Mulan’s character.
