Irregularities in car sales made public
    2019-08-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SOME unspoken practices of 4S car shops in Shenzhen were exposed by the Shenzhen Economic Daily yesterday.

The irregularities include charging additional fees, tie-ins with car insurance, high fees for license plates and service fees for mortgages, an investigative report by the newspaper showed yesterday.

A resident surnamed Zhang placed an order for a car in June and wanted to get a license plate before July 1, before the new emissions standard was implemented.

Zhang signed the contract and paid the 5,000-yuan (US$710) deposit but was told later that the car was not sold in the Shenzhen market. If Zhang still wanted the car, he needed to pay an additional 5,000 yuan, or he could get a refund.

Zhang demanded double the refund if the car dealer couldn’t honor the contract.

In another scenario, some car dealers sold cars by tying them to car insurance.

It generally costs about 9,000 yuan to insure a new car. The car dealers can then get commissions of 15-30 percent from insurance companies, which constitute the major source of revenue for car-dealing businesses.
