Cross-province settlement of medical bills made available
    2019-08-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A NATIONALLY unified medical insurance system that can directly settle cross-province medical reimbursement cases has been put into operation, allowing residents of one province to seek treatment in another, the Shenzhen Evening News reported.

Residents covered by basic medical insurance will only have to pay for the share of medical expenses for which they are responsible. Other expenses will be paid by the home medical insurance agencies to the medical institutions where the treatment was received, according to the Shenzhen Municipal Health-care Security Bureau.

However, the insured are required to have a financial social security card that combines the financial and social security functions.

The direct settlement of medical bills provides a new way to relieve financial burdens on patients who would otherwise have to pay all of their expenses before getting a refund by simplifying the complicated reimbursement procedure.

According to the city’s social security authorities, cross-province settlement of medical bills mainly targets four groups of people, namely retirees who have settled in different regions, residents who have lived in other regions for a long time, employees who are dispatched to work in other regions and patients who have transferred to a hospital in another region.

Patients who have been admitted to the emergency departments of hospitals in some areas can also apply for direct settlement of medical bills.

At present, insured people are required to submit records to medical insurance agencies in their home regions and choose designated medical institutions in other provincial regions for direct reimbursement.
