A: Come on, you lazy bones, show a leg! It’s the first day of school and you don’t want to be late. B: But it’s only 6 a.m.! We have enough time before the morning traffic hits. Note: Primarily heard in the United Kingdom and of navy origin, this informal saying means “to get out of bed.” The boatswain would call his crew up from their hammocks: “Turn out there, show a leg!” By showing a leg, they may convince him that they are not asleep and ready to jump out quickly. Others say that ships would allow the married sailors to have their wives join them aboard. When it’s time for the ship to set sail, the call would be made in the bunk area, asking people to show a leg from underneath the covers and allow the females to dress and leave the ship. |
