Moon-cake import

SHENZHEN checkpoints have seen a surge in the import of moon cakes recently, with 11.98 tons passing through customs in 1,535 batches.

Most of the moon cakes were from Hong Kong, Macao and Malaysia.

The value of the moon cakes has reached US$150 million.

When buying imported moon cakes, consumers need to confirm that the Chinese-language labels on the packages contain the name, ingredients and manufacture and expiration dates.

Tortoise smuggling

A WOMAN was caught at Luohu Checkpoint smuggling 52 small tortoises across the border to the mainland last week.

The woman was carrying a plastic bag and looked nervous, so she was instructed to stop for an inspection. Officers found some tortoises hidden in socks. The woman couldn’t provide quarantine certificates for the tortoises.
