THE Atlas-based computing system powered by Huawei’s Ascend series AI processors and full stack, all scenario AI solutions based on Kunpeng server chips, has been utilized by the city’s power supply industry, improving safety, reliability and efficiency.

At a forum Tuesday announcing the latest achievements of the ICT Joint Innovation Lab by Huawei Technologies and Shenzhen Power Supply Co. Ltd. of the China Southern Power Grid, Lyu Zhining, director with the Information Center of Shenzhen Power Supply Co. Ltd., said big data and IoT technologies are offering solutions for innovation in the power supply industry.

At the forum, Lyu demonstrated how AIoT (artificial intelligent + IoT) has changed the traditional way of inspecting wires and cables.

“Currently, at power transmission stations and towers, we have installed 2,000 monitoring cameras embedded with Huawei Atlas 200 AI accelerator modules, and deployed drones to inspect along the power lines,” said Lyu.

The technologies not only ensure the safe operation of power lines, but also complete the workload of 20 outdoor power line safety inspectors in two hours. Efficiency has been improved by 80 times and, what is more, the aerial inspections can find hidden perils and identify discrepancies that are hard for inspectors to find.

Under the collaboration, the joint research lab has also made progress in the application of 5G in the power supply industry.

Connectivity, computing and the cloud will be the infrastructure of the intelligent world, and computing is an accelerator for the early arrival of the intelligent era, according to Zhou Jianjun, vice president of Huawei’s China-region company.

Through the lab, which was set up last October after the two sides signed a strategic cooperation framework, Huawei has taken the lead in the world in piloting 5G technologies in the power supply industry. Zhang hopes more applications in big data, IoT, AI, computing and ICT will be applied to the digital transformation of the power supply industry through deepened cooperation.
