¥3m payout sought over woman’s death
    2019-09-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE family of a 27-year-old woman from Shenzhen has demanded 3 million yuan (US$424,000) from the management of Mt. Huashan scenic park in compensation for her death.

The woman, Peng Wen, who had lived in Pingshan District, was killed while touring Mt. Huashan on July 16, and the suspect was arrested by the police for investigation.

The investigation report shows that Peng was robbed, sexually assaulted and suffocated to death, according Southern Metropolis Day, which quoted the lawyer representing Peng’s family.

The family is demanding compensation for what they say was the management of the scenic spot’s negligence and a loophole that allowed the suspect to avoid purchasing a ticket to enter the park before killing the victim not far from the entrance to the park. If the family is compensated, some of the money will be given to a charity organization to help those in need, according to the report.

Peng had traveled alone from Shenzhen to Mt. Huashan scenic park July 16 after quitting her job. According to Peng’s boyfriend, surnamed Guo, she texted him after arriving at the foot of Mt. Huashan before she checked into a hostel. She went out to the scenic area at around 5 p.m. July 16, one hour before the park closed.

However, Guo lost contact with Peng after she sent him a message on WeChat.

On July 18, after Peng had been gone for two days, the hostel owner reported her missing to the police, because a tour around Mt. Huashan could usually be completed in one day.

Huayin police later arrested a suspect surnamed Yang, 28, who admitted to having robbed and killed Peng. Police discovered Peng’s body in a cave with the directions given by the suspect. A DNA test revealed that Yang had raped Peng before killing her and hiding her body in the cave.

Peng’s parents have demanded compensation because they believe the management is liable for the death of their daughter.

“At the entrance to the scenic spot there is a creek, through which people can enter without paying for a ticket. This is a loophole in the park’s management. There are no monitoring cameras and no response when a victim shouts for help,” Huang Weidong, the family’s lawyer, was quoted by the newspaper as saying. The scenic spot has refused the demand.
