Barry Douglas to give recital
    2019-09-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Barry Douglas will present Tchaikovsky’s “The Seasons” and Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” at Mountain View Theater in Shekou.

“The Seasons” is a set of 12 short character pieces for solo piano, each of which is characteristic of a different month of the year. “Pictures at an Exhibition” is a suite of 10 pieces composed for piano. The suite is Mussorgsky’s most famous piano composition and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists.

Gramophone once said of Douglas’ rendition that “There have been more viscerally thrilling ‘Pictures’ than this from Horowitz and Richter down, but few with such musical and textual integrity.”

Douglas has established a major international career since winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, the first non-Russian pianist to be honored with the award since Van Cliburn in 1958.

As a soloist he has previously given concerts with the BBC Scottish Symphony, London Symphony, Russian National, Cincinnati Symphony, Staatskapelle, Orchestre National de France, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Hong Kong Philharmonic orchestras, among others, and regularly plays in recitals throughout the world, with recent performances in Britain, the Netherlands, Mexico, China and the United States.

Douglas founded the chamber orchestra Camerata Ireland in 1999 to celebrate and nurture young musicians. The orchestra debuted at the BBC Proms in London and a world premiere of a new cantata commissioned by The Honorable Irish Society in 2013.
