ETC deception uses link in message

A NEW kind of fraud that uses a link attached to a text message related to ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) has taken place quite often since ETC started becoming popular, leading many police bureaus to issue warnings.

A car owner, surnamed Chen, received a message that read, “Your approval process for ETC hasn’t been completed yet, please click the link and finish the process to guarantee normal use.” The message also said that a 200-yuan (US$28) award could be received once the process was finished.

Since Chen had installed the ETC device in his car recently, he assumed he was just unfamiliar with the process instead of becoming suspicious. Chen then asked a staffer with the bank where he registered for the system to check if he had missed or misunderstood something.

However, the staffer told him that some other car owners had been deceived by such messages. When they clicked the link, their phones would download a Trojan virus, leading to property loss. The Municipal Public Security Bureau said that it is a new trick.

Another case involved a green-hand driver, surnamed Li, who had also registered for ETC for a short time. Li received a message from a number starting with “106” claiming that 500 points were in her account, which she could collect and exchange for prizes by clicking the link attached at the end of the message.

Li was confused, because she hadn’t used ETC and had never even driven on the highway since installing the system, so she didn’t understand how she could have received these points. She asked a staffer with the bank to confirm the message.

The police warned that citizens should be careful about text messages with links that promise a “discount” or “reward points for gifts” since most of them are fraudulent. Whoever receives these messages should delete them at once instead of clicking the link. If you are confronted with such problems, call the bank’s official hotline and ask a staffer for help or go directly to the bank counter.  (Chen Siqi)
