He began with a couple of jokes before homing in on the main subject of his lecture. Note: To “home in” on something is to move gradually and steadily toward that something as a target. The expression originally alluded to a vessel, aircraft or missile being guided to its target by a radio beam or some other means. It’s been used since the 1920s. |
