Taiwan not qualified to join Interpol: spokesperson
    2019-10-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

TAIWAN is not eligible to join Interpol because the latter is an inter-governmental international organization, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said Wednesday.

Taiwan’s participation in activities of international organizations must be based on the one-China principle and rules of international organizations, said Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.

It must be handled through consultation between the two sides across the Taiwan Strait, said Ma.

“Our stance has been clear and consistent,” he added.

On Taiwan’s participation in activities of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group, Ma said it must comply with the one-China principle and relevant stipulations in APEC’s memorandum of understanding.

Separatist forces and their acts seeking “Taiwan independence” were the biggest threat to cross-Straits peace, Ma added.

Ma made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing when responding to a question about a defense plan drawn by the relevant departments of the island, which was targeted at the mainland.

Ma warned that “armed confrontation is a dead-end.”

If the Taiwan side upholds the 1992 Consensus and opposes “Taiwan independence,” cross-Straits relations will improve and develop, and the interests of Taiwan compatriots will be safeguarded and enhanced, Ma stressed.

“Otherwise, relations will be damaged and the situation in the Taiwan Strait will see turbulence,” Ma said. “The interests and welfare of Taiwan compatriots will be harmed.”
