La Liga asks for ‘El Clasico’ to be moved amid Catalan protests
    2019-10-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SPAIN’S La Liga on Wednesday has asked their country’s soccer federation (RFER) to move the upcoming “El Clasico” match from Barcelona to Madrid amid growing protests in Catalonia.

The match is due to take place Oct. 26 at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium, due to the days of protest in the city, the league has asked for the fixture to be reversed.

“We have requested the competitions committee of the RFEF to meet and change the location of El Clasico to Madrid because of exceptional circumstances beyond our control,” a La Liga spokesman said.

If the game is to be moved this time, it means their second meeting in March 2020 this season will take place in Barcelona.

However, both teams have already rejected the proposal.

Barcelona believes the match must be played at home and Real Madrid insists that if there are security risks, then the match should be postponed entirely rather than merely moved, according to Spanish soccer website Marca.com.

The RFEF competitions committee is expected to make its decision by Oct. 24.(SD-Agencies)
