French guitarist depicts musical profile of cities

AFTER the last note rang out from the six-stringed acoustic guitar in Thibault Cauvin’s hands, putting an end to a young shepherd’s adventure into the hullabaloo of downtown Istanbul, he kissed the instrument with affection amid a long-lasting applause in the auditorium.

The French classical guitarist, who has won 36 individual prizes in international guitar competitions so far — an accolade outnumbering any other guitarist in the world — staged a repertoire from his “Cities” albums at the Mountain View Theater of the Sea World Arts and Culture Center in Nanshan District on Friday night.

Cauvin’s recital featured a track list inspired by his extensive global tour to some 20 countries over 15 years. The guitarist paid homage to nine cities which impressed him both as a traveler and a musician.

Cauvin spoke in the romantic fashion artists are known for during an exclusive interview with the Shenzhen Daily: “During my travel around the world, I found many kinds of inspirations that encouraged me to write and play music, like the prevailing music style in an exotic culture, the color of the sky, the smell of perfume in the street, and the busy noises made by subways and bicycles. The composition of each city tells a unique fairytale.”

“The albums present collaborations between local composers of each city and myself, and collaborations between classical guitar and other stringed instruments, such as the zither in Indian music and koto in Japanese music. I’m also looking to collaborate with Chinese instruments such as the erhu,” said the guitarist.

Cauvin depicted the running horses and bonfire carnivals on the Mongolian prairies in the performance of “Ulan Bator” through imitating the sound of a horse-headed fiddle.

“Berlin” is jointly composed by Cauvin and his brother. He started the piece in a low bass-like key to portray a hint of flintiness embedding in the stoned architectures of the German capital, then turned to a brighter note to remind the listeners of the city’s inner mildness.

Dubbed “a genius born with a guitar in his hand,” Cauvin was also born a traveler at heart, a trait that inspired this extensive tour. “My grandfather was a pilot. When I was a little boy, I liked to see him off until the plane was out of the sight, which made us dream of having a life of traveling and playing music across the world,” he said.

In 2009, Cauvin released his fifth album “Across China” together with a documentary of his China tour. He has visited China eight times and would like to include a Chinese city in the third edition of his “Cities” album.

“Chinese cities offer great varieties for me to make music, since I’ve visited quite a lot of them, like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou and so on. I would prefer to make music with a Chinese composer who is in love with a specific city,” he said.

“In Shenzhen, I feel the power of development. I think music of cities like Shenzhen should be powerful, intense and modern, which can represent the future of the world,” said Cauvin.

Growing up in a family of musicians, Cauvin started playing guitar at the age of six and had already won 13 major prizes by the time he was 20.
