Sterling’s hat trick steers City, Real wins
    2019-10-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

RAHEEM STERLING recorded a hat trick in just 11 minutes as Manchester City beat Atalanta 5-1 Tuesday in the Champions League.

Elsewhere, it took over 200 minutes but Real Madrid finally took a lead in this Champions League campaign after Toni Kroos’ goal in the 17th minute, which stood up as the Spanish giants beat Galatasaray 1-0 Tuesday.

Kylian Mbappe came off the bench for Paris Saint-Germain and also recorded the first Champions League hat trick of his career, while Tottenham Hotspur won big and Bayern Munich held off Olympiacos.

At the Etihad, Sterling turned a surprisingly tense affair into a rout with a hat trick in just 11 minutes.

He scored his first goal in the 58th minute, added a second in the 64th and polished it off by getting on the end of a Riyad Mahrez ball in the 69th minute.

Sergio Aguero scored the first two goals in the span of five minutes after Atalanta took a shock early lead on Ruslan Malinovskiy’s penalty just inside the half-hour mark.

This is the first Champions League hat trick of Sterling’s career, and Man City remains in cruise control in Group C, with a full nine points from three matches thus far.

After being routed by PSG and rallying to draw Club Brugge, Real Madrid had yet to actually lead in the Champions League this season.

Including stoppage time and the first 16 minutes of the Galatasaray match, it took Real Madrid over 200 minutes to go ahead. But go ahead they did after Eden Hazard cleverly stabbed a ball back into open space that Toni Kroos blasted home.

Real Madrid fired 11 other shots on net and picked up a sorely needed three points. For as much as they’ve stumbled out of the gate in Europe, Zinedine Zidane’s men sit second in Group A with four points, well behind PSG’s nine but in decent position to advance nonetheless.

Last we saw Tottenham in the Champions League, they were getting annihilated at home by Bayern Munich. This time, Spurs did the annihilating in a 5-0 rout of Red Star Belgrade.

Harry Kane headed home Spurs’ first goal inside of 10 minutes.

Kane ended up with two goals, as did Son Heung-min, who scored his first with a half-volley right in front of goal that was trickier than it looked:

Erik Lamela also scored with a terrific spin and finish and Spurs seized second place in Group B on four points, five behind Bayern Munich.

Corentin Tolisso’s 75th-minute goal went from insurance to needed for Bayern Munich, which won 3-2 in Athens.

Tolisso put the German giants up 3-1 with 15 minutes or so to play, but Olympiacos pulled one back through Guilherme in the 79th minute.  (SD-Agencies)
