MORE than 70 percent of the 1,000 talents from over 160 countries and regions were coming to China for the first time, and most of them were coming to Shenzhen for the first time, so UNLEASH also serves as a great platform to showcase the image of Shenzhen and China, according to Deng Xiaojun, vice director of the Shenzhen Municipal Science, Technology and Innovation Commission.

“Compared with their previous impressions of China, which they got from the media in their own countries, the China and Shenzhen they get to know through this event is totally new and fresh, especially for the group focusing on the topic of affordable and clean energy, which visited Shenzhen Energy Center. From that building, they could see the Ping An building, Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center and the Civic Center, so they saw a dynamic city,” said Deng during an exclusive interview with the Shenzhen Daily yesterday morning.

Deng said that the event displays Shenzhen’s image in two ways. “On the one hand, our beautiful urban environment, the well-planned urban architecture, our safe society and the smooth traffic all have left deep impressions on these young minds.”

“On the other hand, UNLEASH 2019 involves the engagement of many leading companies in Shenzhen, including Tencent, Vanke and BGI, so the talents got to learn about the high-tech development of Shenzhen through these enterprises. From Shenzhen’s technological development they also learned about China’s development,” said Deng.

“Shenzhen’s GDP reached 2.4 trillion yuan (US$343 billion) last year and its R&D investment exceeded over 100 billion yuan, representing 4.2 percent of the city’s GDP, which is basically at the same level as developed countries like Israel and South Korea,” said Deng.
