贩卖焦虑
    2019-11-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

fànmài jiāolǜ

Meaning:

Translated as “selling anxiety,” this term refers to the scenario where people or businesses drive up others’ anxiety about certain issues by exaggeration and repeated media exposure so that they can make profits. Either they can profit from the traffic brought to their website or social media platform by the sensational news (most times proved to be fake), or they can actually sell things to those feeling insecure.

Example:

A: 我家孩子的同学都上各种补习班的课,我们什么课都不上会不会竞争不过他们?

Wǒ jiā háizi de tóngxué dōu shàng gèzhǒng bǔxíbān de kè,wǒmen shénme kè dōu búshàng huìbúhuì jìngzhēng búguò tāmen?

My kid’s classmates attend all kinds of after-school tutoring, but my kid attends none. Will this put us in disadvantage in the race?

B: 小学生有必要上补习班吗?别理那些贩卖焦虑的

人。

Xiǎoxuéshēng yǒu bìyào shàng bǔxíbān ma?Bié lǐ nàxiē fànmài jiāolǜ de rén。

Is there actually a need for primary school kids to attend after-school tutoring? Just ignore those who sell this competitiveness anxiety.
