THE Ministry of Industry and Information (MII) has shown support for building Shenzhen into a pace-setter for innovation and the application of AI technologies.

At an inaugural ceremony, Shenzhen Vice Mayor Wang Lixin said that building Shenzhen into a leader in AI application is one important measure in the drive to build the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

“Shenzhen will try to make breakthroughs in core AI technologies, improve the industrialization environment for AI technologies, build scenarios for AI applications and become a source of AI innovation and a highland for the development of the AI industry,” said Wang.

The inauguration of the pace-setting area for AI development marked the entrance of Shenzhen’s AI industry into a new phase of development, featuring high-quality, deep-integration and innovative application.

At the inaugural forum on AI application and integration with the real economy Thursday, Wang Xinzhe, chief economist with MII, said AI is becoming a new economic growth point, but it still has some weak points in integration with real economy, algorithmic originality and high-end chip development.

The ministry approved three areas, including Shenzhen, to be AI pace-setting areas this October, hoping Shenzhen will build deep AI application scenarios in key fields like medical health, finance, supply chain, transportation and manufacturing, and focus on its advantageous industries, such as intelligent chips, drones, robotics, automobiles and video image recognition.

“Through reforms, mechanism innovation and the acceleration of the application of new technologies and products, AI technologies will play a bigger role in serving the development of the real economy,” Wang said.
