Xiaoyuan Mental Arithmetic is a Chinese app designed for elementary students, parents and teachers.

It offers online math practice for students in an array of grades and question types, including calculations, unit conversions, equation-solving and problem-solving. Parents and teachers can take a photo of students’ homework on paper, upload it on the app, and then it will be reviewed by artificial intelligence (AI) in seconds.

“In a recent experiment, we gave 110,000 solved calculation questions for AI and human teachers to review. AI made mistakes on 104 questions while human teachers made mistakes on 1,050 questions. The reason for AI making mistakes is some students’ illegible handwriting,” said Wang Xiangdong, who is in charge of Xiaoyuan Mental Arithmetic.

Available on iOS and Android, the app was developed by Beijing-based Yuanfudao Company, which offers online mathematics lessons and also researches computer vision, natural language processing and speech recognition.(Cao Zhen)
