Mourinho loses in return to Old Trafford
    2019-12-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

MANCHESTER United handed former manager Jose Mourinho his first loss in charge of Tottenham as Marcus Rashford scored twice in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Fired by United 12 months ago, Mourinho was given a generous reception by the club’s fans as he walked along the touchline to the dugout before kickoff even though he was plotting to defeat his former team and collect a fourth win in two weeks at Tottenham.

Rashford ensured that did not happen, opening the scoring in the sixth minute when he picked up a loose ball on the left, cut inside, and drilled a low shot inside the near post to beat goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

Dele Alli maintained his strong scoring form since Mourinho’s arrival by equalizing with a superb individual goal in the 39th, bringing down a dropping ball with a deft touch and poking a finish into the corner.

Rashford was the standout player all match and he grabbed the winner from the penalty spot after being fouled by Moussa Sissoko following a foraging run down the left into the box.

The win lifted United above Tottenham into sixth place in the standings and should ease some of the pressure on Mourinho’s replacement, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after the team’s disappointing recent draws against Sheffield United and Aston Villa.

Mourinho had started his Spurs tenure with league wins over West Ham and Bournemouth, and a Champions League victory against Olympiakos.

“The three points are massive for us,” said Solskjaer. “We’ve had too many draws this season and given too many points away from winning positions. It’s a great lesson the last two games  and we came back in a great manner.”

Mourinho described his reception at Old Trafford as “nice and polite.”

“It’s a step back against a team that is playing with the same objective as us, trying to get up the table and reach the top six,” he said. “We need to keep going. We made mistakes but it’s not good to be crying about them now.”

Liverpool surged eight points clear after a 5-2 victory over struggling Everton at Anfield.

All but one of the goals came before half-time as Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri, who replaced the rested Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, put Liverpool 2-0 up inside 17 minutes. Michael Keane pulled a goal back for Everton before Origi got his second and Sadio Mane finished off a blistering counter-attack to make it 4-1.

The scoring did not stop there as Richarlison cut the deficit once more, but Georginio Wijnaldum hammered the final nail in the Everton coffin as an eighth defeat in 11 league games sees the Toffees slip into the bottom three.

Second-placed Leicester equaled its top-flight league record of seven consecutive wins with a 2-0 victory against bottom side Watford while Chelsea bounced back from two consecutive league defeats to beat Aston Villa 2-1.

Leicester moved back above Manchester City after beating Watford.

The Foxes were awarded a penalty after the break when Jonny Evans went down clutching his face inside the area and Jamie Vardy made no mistake, scoring for the seventh straight game.

James Maddison sealed the points deep into stoppage time.

Chelsea badly missed the presence of Tammy Abraham due to a hip injury in Saturday’s shock 1-0 home defeat to West Ham and the return of their top scorer proved the difference as the side beat Villa 2-1.

Abraham’s 26 goals on loan helped Villa get promoted last season and he did not celebrate when heading in Reece James’s cross to open the scoring.

Trezeguet bundled home to bring the visitors level before the break, but Abraham then turned provider by chesting down for Mason Mount to brilliantlt volley high past Tom Heaton.
