7 killed, 2 injured

A HEAVY dump truck turned over Saturday afternoon on a highway in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, leaving seven people dead and two injured, according to local authorities.

The accident occurred at around 3:45 p.m. on a highway section in Wenshan City, when the truck hit the protective net along the road and then turned over. Seven people were killed and two injured after a small car and a two-wheeled motorcycle coming from the opposite direction were crushed underneath the truck, said the city’s publicity department.

Thick fog

THE national observatory yesterday continued to issue a yellow alert for the thick fog that will shroud parts of the country in the following two days.

A thick fog that reduced visibility to less than 1 km enveloped the central and southern parts of North China, areas between the Yellow River and the Huaihe River, as well as Jiangsu and Hubei yesterday morning, covering an area of about 500,000 square km, said a forecast from the National Meteorological Center.

Visibility in some areas of Beijing, Hebei, Henan and Shandong was less than 200 meters yesterday morning.

The fog will linger this morning and tomorrow morning, according to the forecast.

Snow leopard spotted

INFRARED cameras have captured images and videos of a snow leopard in the Wolong National Nature Reserve, the reserve’s management authorities said.

It is the first time that a snow leopard has been spotted in the core habitat of the giant pandas in the reserve.

The big cat was captured in 12 photos and two videos in early June by two infrared cameras, about 3,300 meters above sea level in the wild, the authorities said Friday.
