Three people arrested for bomb test in HK
    2019-12-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

HONG KONG police Saturday arrested three male residents suspected of testing explosives at an out-of-the-way place in Tuen Mun.

The police seized chemicals, suspected explosives and remote controls, similar to what had been found in previous cases. Defensive equipment used by the arrested people during the explosion test was also found, including a bulletproof steel plate and a gas mask.

Li Kwai-wah, senior superintendent of the organized crime and triad bureau, said the test was designed to improve the performance of explosives for possible future attacks in processions and assemblies.

In Hong Kong, causing an explosion likely to endanger life or property is a serious offense which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

An increasing number of dangerous weapons have been found in Hong Kong recently, including a pistol and over 100 bullets, two home-made bombs, and an imitation firearm.

In a separate case, Hong Kong police have arrested three men and two women in suspected connection with the murder of a 70-year-old street cleaner a month ago, a tragedy that happened during rioters’ brutal assaults on residents trying to remove road blockages.

The five people, aged between 15 and 18, were arrested Friday for murder, taking part in a riot and causing harm, the police said in a statement Saturday.

They are being detained for further inquiries, and investigation by the Regional Crime Unit of New Territories North is under way, according to the police.

A group of black-clad rioters set up roadblocks near North District Town Hall in Sheung Shui on Nov. 13. They clashed with residents who tried to clear the road, throwing iron rods, bricks and other hard objects at the latter.

A victim was hit in the head by a brick when filming the scene with his cell phone. He was knocked down to the ground and fell unconscious. His death was announced on late Nov. 14 at the hospital.

The man, an outsourced worker of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, was walking past the clash by himself on his lunch break.

This was the first death of an innocent civilian during the months-long unrest in Hong Kong.
