A: I saw you with a guy at the park the other day. Are you seeing someone? B: It must have been Thursday evening. My friend was desperate to go on a date with this guy, so I took one for the team and agreed to go on a double date with his less attractive friend. We took a walk in the park after dinner and I never met him again. Note: This idiom means “to sacrifice one’s own welfare or interests in favor of others’” or “to make a sacrifice on behalf of the group.” The expression began in baseball and has been cited in print since at least 1969. The original use is when a baseball batter deliberately allows himself to be hit by a pitched ball that forces a home run to win a tied game. |
