A REVISED scheme for evaluating the comprehensive quality of middle school students has been released by the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau with a call for public opinion, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported. The new scheme has made adjustments to the evaluation method and only evaluates students to see whether they have reached the standard or not in the basic indicators. The evaluation results will no longer serve as references for priority enrollment for students who have the same academic examination results. Instead, students who fail to pass the comprehensive evaluation cannot apply for first-level high schools in Guangdong Province. In the new scheme, the comprehensive quality indicators are divided into two parts, namely the basic indicators of comprehensive quality and the outstanding performances of students with special talents in sports or artistic fields. The evaluation of the basic indicators covers five aspects, including ideology and morality, academic performance, physical and mental health, artistic literacy, and practice and innovation, while students’ outstanding performances in certain areas are written about by students under the guidance of teachers and parents. The new student evaluation system has also been made more easy to operate for students, teachers and schools. Any suggestions for the new student evaluation scheme can be sent to jjc@sz.edu.cn via email or faxed to 0755-88125662. On Dec. 11, the municipal education bureau decided to halt the original student evaluation system due to mounting complaints saying that it was too complicated and had become a time-consuming job for students and parents.
