Home tests available for HPV screening
    2020-01-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WOMEN aged 30 to 59 who live in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shunde and haven’t carried out regular cervical cancer screenings can now apply for a free cervical cancer screening online, sznews.com reported.

The national cervical cancer early diagnosis and treatment demonstration base of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital is offering 1,000 free screening locations for underscreened women to get at-home HPV tests and mail the self-sampling kits to the hospital.

Eligible women can register and apply for the screening at http://47.106.227.241/.

Applicants will receive self-collection brushes as well as instructions for taking samples and mailing the self-sampling kits. The screening results can be inquired about through the registered account. All registration information will be kept confidential throughout the process.

It has been reported that Professor Wu Ruifang at the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology department and fellow researchers have been studying the early diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer since 2009.

They have improved the self-sampling and screening technology and found that an HPV test on a sample that a woman collects for herself performs as well as an HPV test done on a doctor-collected sample through a population-based study.

The medical team has developed and verified a solid DNA sampling card that is convenient for transportation and preservation. The chemicals on the card can immediately split the cells, reduce the risk of sample contamination and facilitate sample transportation and storage.

The hospital previously cooperated with Pingshan District Government to implement an online-offline screening mode in communities. Within three years, 10,000 samples were collected as scheduled, which confirmed the feasibility and the superiority of the mode.

Cervical cancer is caused by high-risk types of HPV (human papillomavirus). In China, the incidence of cervical cancer is 15/100,000 and is increasing year by year, according to statistics.

Research shows that screening and treatment of pre-cancer lesions are critical to reducing the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer.   (Zhang Yu)
