BAO’AN District has been awarded as a “Top 10 Social Governance Innovation Award of China in 2019” for developing innovative solutions to water pollution, the Bao’an Daily reported yesterday.
The award was presented at the 14th China Xiaokang Forum held in Foshan City, Guangdong Province, on Saturday. It is a State-level forum that spotlights the key problems and achievements in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
As a densely populated industrial district in Shenzhen, Bao’an has witnessed rapid economic growth in the past 40 years of reform and opening up. Nevertheless, the 66 rivers in the district have been polluted to varying degrees amid the industrialization boom.
To fight against water pollution, Bao’an has launched a unique “Bao’an Model” featuring high intensity, continuous investment, whole-basin systematic governance and joint operation to clear up polluted bodies of water, the Daily reported.
The district has worked with first-rate State-owned enterprises, such as Power Construction Corporation of China and China Communications Construction Co. Ltd. to systematically formulate plans on improving the water environment in Bao’an.
Meanwhile, the district has made targeted efforts in dealing with every polluted river to ensure that the water quality of the main streams and the branches of rivers meets the standard on sunny and rainy days.
The district has also built a wide range of facilities to intercept sewage, remove industrial sludge and achieve rainwater and sewage diversion.
At present, all 66 rivers in Bao’an have been made clear again. The water quality of the Bao’an section of the Maozhou River has been greatly improved to reach the Grade V standard in China’s five-tier water quality assessment system.
According to statistics, the total length of separate rainwater and sewage pipes in Bao’an has reached 14,125 kilometers, and two separate systems for rainwater and sewage have been built.
A total of 180.5 kilometers of pipes for water replenishment and seven pumping stations have been built. Water supply capacity has been maintained at 1.46 million tons per day, while rainwater and sewage diversion has been basically realized in the whole district.
Additionally, Bao’an plans to build 255 kilometers of ecological ways in the district. The pilot section of the Maozhou River Ecological Way (Bao’an Section) will be built in 2020. (Zhang Yu) |
