Tourists sentenced

THREE tourists were sentenced to prison and fined 6 million yuan (US$859,900) in total for causing damage to a world heritage site in East China’s Jiangxi Province, local authorities said.

The three tourists from neighboring Zhejiang Province drilled 26 holes in a 128-mete-tall rock on Sanqing Mountain, a world natural heritage site, and used ropes to climb to the top of the rock on April 15, 2017, according to the site’s administration committee. They also refused to listen to staff guidance at the site.

Scientist stands trial

LI NING, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at China Agricultural University (CAU), stood trial Monday at the Intermediate People’s Court of Songyuan in northeast China’s Jilin Province for embezzlement.

Zhang Lei, an associate researcher at CAU, also stood trial for embezzlement.

The prosecutor accused Li and Zhang of taking advantage of the positions of managing the funds for scientific research projects to embezzle over 37.56 million yuan (US$ 5.38 million) from 2008 to 2012.

Death sentence upheld

SHANGHAI Municipal Higher People’s Court on Monday upheld the death sentence for a man who stabbed and killed two school children outside a primary school in Shanghai last year.

The Shanghai court rejected Huang Yichuan’s appeal against the death penalty verdict given by Shanghai Municipal No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court in May.
