DEPUTIES registered yesterday for the annual session of Shenzhen’s legislature, the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress, which opens today, expressing their expectations for the city’s development in 2020.

This year is the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and marks the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and of Shenzhen as a pilot demonstration area for socialism with Chinese characteristics being in full swing.

“In 2019, Shenzhen was encouraged by central authorities’ favorable policies for building the Greater Bay Area and the demonstration area. We feel the responsibility to work harder in 2020 and make people more satisfied,” Wu Bin said in an interview yesterday while he was registering at the Civic Center in Futian District.

Han Wei from SUSTech said she was most impressed by Shenzhen’s good development momentum in 2019 against the backdrop of the complicated economic and social situation.

“As a deputy from the education circle, I think we have tried our utmost to carry out reforms and made remarkable achievements,” said Han.

Deputies also expressed that building Shenzhen into a demonstration area has put forward an important research topic for Shenzhen regarding legislation. Shenzhen should make full use of its local legislation rights and set an example of construction of the Greater Bay Area and demonstration area.

In the four days until Saturday, deputies will hear work reports by the city government, the legislature, Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court and Shenzhen Municipal People’s Procuratorate, review budgets, and elect new leadership of the legislature and the city government as well as heads of the court and procuratorate.

At yesterday’s opening of the annual meeting of the city’s political advisory body, the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Consultative Conference (CPPCC), 12 political advisers gave suggestions on building the Greater Bay Area and demonstration area, and 26 members put forward reports on science and technology innovation, business environment reform, the development of the real economy and the rule of law.

Liu Runhua, executive deputy chairman of the city’s political advisory body, said the committee received a total of 588 proposals from political advisers in the past year. Among them, 83.2 percent have been filed and handed to related departments to process. They covered different sectors such as economy, social construction, culture, ecology, finance innovation, talent cultivation and industrial support.

In 2020, local political advisers will focus their attention on themes such as construction of the Greater Bay Area and demonstration area and the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), difficulties that need to be solved for social and economic development, and issues that could enhance the sense of happiness among residents, according to Liu.
