Oscar buzz to hit Chinese mainland
    2020-01-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

OSCAR buzz for “Marriage Story,” “Little Women” and “Jojo Rabbit,” as well as “Dolittle,” are scheduled to hit the Chinese mainland in February, according to domestic online movie ticketing apps.

Black comedy war film “Jojo Rabbit,” which was written and directed by and stars Taika Waititi, has been confirmed for theatrical release Feb. 12. Set in World War II, the dark satire tells the story from the perspective of a young boy, Jojo, who is passionate to be a part of the Hitler Youth. Roman Griffin Davis plays the title character. The film, which earned six Oscar nominations, also stars Scarlett Johansson, Thomasin McKenzie and Sam Rockwell.

Johansson’s other movie “Marriage Story,” which snatched six nominations for the Oscar, is likely to shine Feb. 28. Written and directed by Noah Baumbach, the film follows Charlie (Adam Driver), a theater director, and Nicole (Johansson), an actress, as they go through a bitter divorce, pushing them over the edge, personally and creatively.

Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” will be released Feb. 14 on the Chinese mainland. The movie, which scored six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, tells the beloved story of the March sisters — four young women each determined to live life on their own terms.

“Dolittle,” which will open in North America this weekend and the Chinese mainland Feb. 21, is a fantasy adventure film directed by Stephen Gaghan. The film is based on the character Doctor Dolittle created by Hugh Lofting and primarily based on “The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle.” Robert Downey Jr. stars as the title character, alongside Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen in live action roles; the voice cast includes Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez and Marion Cotillard.(SD-Agencies)
