‘1917’ dominates BAFTA film awards
    2020-02-04  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SAM MENDES’ gripping war drama “1917” continued its awards-season success, taking home multiple coveted honors, including best film, at the BAFTA awards ceremony held in Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday.

The heart-stopping movie about two British soldiers tasked with delivering orders to cancel an attack during World War I earned seven trophies overall, with a best director win for Mendes, among the others.

In winning best film — the top honor at the British award show — “1917” beat out a loaded field that also included “Parasite,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Joker” and “The Irishman.”

Based on a first-person account by Mendes’ grandfather about the war, “1917” also won the BAFTA honor for best British film.

“Parasite,” meanwhile, won best film not in the English language and best original screenplay at Sunday’s BAFTAs.

The BAFTAs, which stands for British Academy Film and Television Academy and representing the annual awards ceremony, were at the center of controversy when the nominations were announced last month when not a single actor of color was nominated in the main acting categories.

Joaquin Phoenix addressed the lack of diversity during the show after winning best actor for “Joker.”

“I feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege,” Phoenix said during his speech, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I think we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here.”

“I don’t think anybody wants a handout or preferential treatment, people just want to be acknowledged, appreciated and respected for their work. This is not a self-righteous condemnation. I’m part of the problem.”

The winners of the four acting categories have remained largely the same at different shows throughout this awards season. That trend continued Sunday. In addition to Phoenix being named best actor, Renée Zellweger received best actress for “Judy,” Brad Pitt won best supporting actor for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Laura Dern took home best supporting actress for “Marriage Story.”

Phoenix, Zellweger, Pitt and Dern won the equivalent honors at the SAG Awards earlier this month, and each received similar trophies at the 2020 Golden Globes as well.

They are each nominated in those same categories awards at the Academy Awards, which will take place Monday at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. (SD-Agencies)
