Fewer vehicles seen on roads during holiday

THE city saw a reduction in traffic with inbound vehicle flow down by 39 percent to 629,200 and outbound vehicles by 31 percent to 614,700 during the three-day Qingming Festival holiday this year.

Due to a combination of the forced closure of cemeteries to tomb sweepers due to the coronavirus, and rainy weather that dampened the interest in short-trip travel, the city’s traffic was smoothly and orderly, according to a release of Shenzhen’s traffic police department yesterday.

Police statistics show that Meiguan Expressway, Longda Expressway and 107 National Highway saw the most outbound vehicles, while the Meiguan, Longda and Guangzhou-Shenzhen expressways saw the most inbound travelers.

To enforce the closure of the cemeteries, police sent teams of officers to dissuade tomb sweepers from visiting the cemeteries and guided them to drive back home.

On Sunday, police recorded 1.91 million vehicles on the roads, a decrease of 36 percent compared to the same period last year. The number of vehicles visiting the city’s eastern tourist attractions, which were often congested with traffic, also dropped by 75 percent.

On Saturday, the first day of the holiday, police in Xili, Nanshan District, dissuaded 150 drivers, unaware of the rules, from going to Baoen Fudi Cemetery for tomb sweeping.

“Because many people had turned to mourn their deceased loved ones online, there were no vehicles queuing on the roads,” said Yao Zhuang, head of the Xili unit of Nanshan’s traffic police department.

Statistics from the city’s park management also showed park visits significantly reduced due to the weather. On the first day of the holiday, Shenzhen Bay Park received 90,000 visits, less than half the number of the same period in 2019.

Despite the low traffic, the violations of driving under the influence of alcohol remained high. Between April 3-6, police caught 32 drivers for drink driving and 38 drivers for drunk driving. Police also caught 88 drivers for driving e-bikes under the influence of alcohol.

The city has entered the severe thunderstorm season and Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory estimates three more rounds of rainfall will affect the city in April, specifically April 12-13, 18-20 and 23-24.

It is forecasted to be cloudy with occasional rain today and there will be sunny periods between tomorrow and Thursday.
