SHENZHEN’S senior high school entrance examination will be postponed by one month to July 20 and 21 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, as announced at a press conference held by the city government yesterday.

The Biology and Geography academic proficiency test for eighth graders will take place July 22, Wang Shuifa, deputy director of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, said at the conference.

Dates for the listening and oral English test and the PE test, additional parts of the entrance exam, will be announced later in accordance with guidance by the Guangdong Provincial Education Department, he said.

Faculty members that will be in close contact with students, including teachers, school doctors, school bus drivers, dormitory staff and security guards, are required to take a nucleic acid test before they return to work, according to Wang.

As of April 21, six teachers and 21 students in the city had tested positive for COVID-19, the city’s public health commission said at the conference.

Of the six teachers, five were confirmed infected patients and the other was an asymptomatic carrier.

Of the five patients, four have aleady been discharged after recovery and the other remains in hospital. The asymptomatic carrier has been out of quarantine.

Of the infected students, there were 16 patients and five asymptomatic carriers. All the patients have been discharged from the hospital.

Of those five carriers, one remains hospitalized and the others have come out of quarantine.

Shen Zhiliang, president of the Futian Foreign Languages School, said 108 of the school faculty members have so far tested negative for COVID-19.

The public health authority will assign a part-time health vice president, selected from medical institutions, to each school to help with the epidemic prevention and control work.

Additionally, at least one health specialist should work on campus from one week before the new term starts until two weeks after the school reopens. The health vice president can be in charge of the work.

Schools are required to provide teachers and students with two face masks each day and put in place infrared thermometers, forehead thermometers, protective clothing, disinfectants and hand sanitizers.

To ensure sufficient epidemic materials for schools, the city government has delivered 16 million disposable masks, 31,800 infrared thermometers, 83,000 surgical masks, 81,000 N95 masks, 36,000 pieces of protective clothing and a number of disinfectants.
