甩锅
    2020-04-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“甩” literally means “to throw away,” and “锅” means “a cooking pot.” This term derives from another term “背锅.” Literally meaning “to carry the cooking pot,” it’s often used as a metaphor for “being the scapegoat for another person.” The origin of this saying can be traced back to the days of China’s Red Army, as senior officials were ordered to carry the cooking pot during the Long March as a form of punishment if they had done something seriously wrong. Gradually, the saying “背黑锅” (carry the black cooking pot) became equivalent to “receiving punishment for other people’s mistakes.” Chinese netizens now use “甩锅” to refer to the scenario where a person or group shirks their responsibility or finds a scapegoat for their own mistakes.

Example:

A: 听说你们销售部换了经理?

Tīngshuō nǐmen xiāoshòubù huànle jīnglǐ?

I’ve heard that your sales manager was replaced. Is it true?

B: 是的。因为原来的经理只要业绩不好就甩锅给其他部门,很多人对他不满。

Shìde。Yīnwèi yuánlái de jīnglǐ zhīyào yèjì bùhǎo jiù shuǎiguō gěi qítā bùmén,hěnduō rén duì tā bùmǎn。

It’s true. The previous guy always blamed other departments for the poor performance of his own department, and many people in the company were holding a grudge against him.
