SONY Pictures has pushed back its two untitled “Spider-Man” sequels for several months as Hollywood studios continue to revamp their release schedules due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The studio announced Friday that Marvel-Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” sequel had been moved from July 16, 2021, to Nov. 5, 2021. Sony Pictures Animation’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” sequel was delayed by six month from April 8, 2022, to Oct. 7, 2022. Tom Holland’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” was one of 2019’s most successful films, grossing US$1.13 billion at the worldwide box office. The rescheduled film is the third installment in the franchise, which launched with 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” won last year’s Academy Award for best animated movie and grossed US$375 million worldwide. Disney and Marvel Studios also announced Friday that they were pushing back the release of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” sequel from Nov. 5, 2021 to March 25, 2022. Additionally, Disney moved “Thor: Love and Thunder” up a week, from Feb. 18, 2022 to Feb. 11, 2022. Benedict Cumberbatch is returning for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” as the Sorcerer Supreme after his 2016 debut, and subsequent appearances in “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” Elizabeth Olsen has been tapped to reprise her role as Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff. Rachel McAdams, however, will not reprise her role as Strange’s colleague Christine Palmer. “Mission: Impossible 7” — set for release next year — is moving back four months as Paramount reshuffles its slate. The Tom Cruise film will now open in theaters Nov. 19, 2021. The next installment in the Cruise franchise had originally been scheduled for July 23, 2021; that date will now be the launching pad for Skydance and Paramount’s sci-fi tentpole “The Tomorrow War.” The latter, starring Chris Pratt, had originally been set to open in December.
