POLICE estimate short-distance travel within Guangdong Province will be the primary form of traveling and the city’s eastern tourist attractions will face heavy traffic during the May Day holiday.

Vehicle flow during the five-day holiday will increase by 10 percent compared to that of normal weekends. Police estimate the peak travel time for vehicles leaving the city will be between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. today and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow.

The expressways will be toll free during the holiday between tomorrow and Tuesday and G15, S31 and S27 are expected to be congested.

Within the city, the Dameisha section of Yantian-Baguang Expressway, Shenzhen Yantian No. 2 Passage, and the Yantian section of Yantian-Paibang Expressway will be seriously congested, police warned.

During the holiday, residents will experience scorching heat with a maximum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and occasional showers, Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said yesterday.

Due to the heat and dry weather, the observatory has issued an alarm for forest fire.

The city recorded 209 millimeters of rainfall so far this year, one-third less than the average of the past five years, and 47 percent less than the amount of the same period in 2019.

In the first quarter, the average temperature in Shenzhen was 2.1 degrees Celsius higher than previous years, and second-highest in the city’s meteorological history.

However, in April, due to the impact of cold air, the temperature was 1.3 degrees Celsius lower than that of the previous year, the lowest in the most recent 10 years.
