SZU ranks 3rd globally in PCT application
    2020-05-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN University (SZU) ranks third among educational institutions in the world in the number of PCT applications in 2019, following University of California and Tsinghua University, according to data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva recently.

Data shows that SZU filed 247 applications in 2019 via WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) System, a news conference of the university said April 30.

To promote the commercialization of scientific and research findings and protect the interests of researchers, the university established an interest allocation mechanism for the transformation of intellectual property rights (IPR) and improved its professor hiring system as well as assessment system.

SZU also established a technology transformation center, a platform specially designed for the technological commercialization of faculty members’ scientific achievements.

The center has regularly released the university’s information of scientific achievements through China Hi-Tech Fair and China University Scientific and Technological Achievements Fair.

Online and offline transaction platforms were established for transformation of scientific achievements.

SZU released an array of regulations and incentive policies to ensure that its research teams have enough funds to submit PCT applications and commercialize technological achievements, and have access to consultation on IPR protection.

“Taking the advantages of scientific research, the university had established joint labs with enterprises around the university to develop cooperation in talent cultivation, patent application and achievement commercialization,” Li Qingquan, president of the university, said at the news conference.

Within five kilometers around SZU, there are many leading enterprises like Tencent, ZTE and DJI, and industrial parks like Shenzhen Software Industry Park.

In the coming three to five years, the university’s Bay Area Research Institute will increase its presence in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, San Francisco Bay Area, New York Bay Area and Tokyo Bay Area. It will become an important innovation platform for Shenzhen in becoming a world science and technology center.
